Ah, yes. Post-Rock. The one music genre that never did mess up with me. Or maybe it did, and I just kinda like it. You see, I and post-rock have a long story dating back from the 2018’s or so… Particularly 2019, where I had a rough time after flirting with a girl online and then we ended up prematurely because, well, it turns out that chatting with people online and then meeting them in person, a lot can change.
And so we parted our ways, and heartbreak welcomed me thus far during that year…. At the same time, I had discovered a not-yet-too-known youtube channel named “worldhaspostrock”, mainly due to We Lost the Sea - Departure Songs, if I remember correctly… Or was it Tortoise - TNT? Well, in any case, I got into contact with that channel, aswell as its community, and most importantly the songs.
Gosh, the songs were, as I remember correctly, out of this world. And as a lyricless genre, being only instrumental in its conceptual detour, it is kinda magical to just float between the melodies and the like… Oh, I hear you right? Yes, yes, yes… Why the hell am I writing about it only after several years, 7+ years, and an entire pandemic gone forth?
Well, mainly due to a random ig post from a post-rock account that I followed back in the day, and suddenly the first post in my feed was a LP disc for “If these trees could talk”, and BAM! That unlocked a whole bunch of memories for myself (because of ‘stuff’, I’d resorted to mainly listening to Soundfields during these last couple of years, and somewhat forgot about the genre, until… today).
But I digress…
Post-rock, and not only the genre, aswell as the whole community gathered around the youtube comment section of those vids was like… home for me. Especially during the COVID lockdown between 2020 and 2021. That was where I spent most of my time, with strangers, listening to livestreams of unknown bands and songs, and just being there somehow.
Heck, I even managed to get into contact and meet the Creator itself (no, not that creator, you stupid!), of worldhaspostrock. No, not in person, but we chatted a bit, and he was a cool guy. Lost a bit of contact with him since then, but I hope that he’s alright. Even got to play a few sessions of Don’t Starve Together during the pandemic. It was cool.
You see, the thing with these communities, or so I find, is that you never know what you might end up finding with it. But, as I remember, most of it is a warm welcome, and loads of “checkpoints” in the comments, from people sharing their struggles somewhat, asking for prayers or the like. If I remember correctly the comments from This Will Destroy You videos were somewhat of the most ecstatic, Explosions in the Sky were kind, Black Hill were somewhat emotional, I guess… Well, you can check that out by yourself, if so you wish. It’s been a while, so I might be mistaken, the comments also might have changed a little bit.
Oh, and fun fact, but ironically, I was kinda to blame that now one such large Post-Rock youtube channel had a discord community with it? Hell, I even got the news that, a few years later, it seemed that two people, one from Poland I guess, and another from Spain (don’t remember the countries exactly) met over the discord channel, fell in love somewhat and then decided to get married?! Crazy! I didn’t count on anything remotely like this happening when one day on the Facebook page (or was it the yt comments channel?) I suggested that it would be awesome to have a place to hangout with the bros to listen to those songs, beside the comment sections.
Well, too bad that I myself couldn’t have enough time to hang around in those chats enough and meet people more. Academia kinda sucked my life out there and it’s been a while.
But I am more than happy to have been part (and still be?) part of such a heartwarming community in that site. Of course, I wtill have my acidic considerations about yt platform as a whole, but that was one place that I felt like I belonged to.
Maybe, who knows, you too could check it out, and have a moment for yourself. Away from all the noise and distractions of modern life that plague us somehow… Just sayin’ anyway.
You do as you wish.
Well, that’s my part on the story.
I hope to see you soon, pal.
Good luck! (and stay safe)
Paece.
